As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, the Friends of the Meriden Public Library
provides a variety of services to the citizens of Meriden in support of the free
public library system. Some of the programs and services of the Friends
include:
Summer Childrens' Programs
The Friends fund a variety of specially created summer library programs for
children that help to promote literacy and library outreach to children in every
age group.
Cultural Performances
The Friends fund special musical events and entertainment performances for
adults. Performances are typically held at the Meriden Public Library with
volunteers of our organization facilitating the events.
Books for Babies
In conjunction with MidState Medical Center, the Friends send a book and library
card home with each newborn delivered at the Meriden-based hospital. This
program ensures that all new parents know about the literacy programs available
to them through the library.
Library Collections
From both monetary and book donations, we build libraries everywhere from fire
houses to senior residences.
Heartbeat of the City
This award-winning monthly television show, which explores the multiple roles
our library plays in the community and the world beyond, airs Wednesday evenings
on the Cox Communications Network.
Friends Bookstore
Located at 1 Colony Street in the heart of the city, the Friends of the Library
Bookstore features quality used books available for sale at discounted
prices. Open six days a week, the bookstore also includes an in-store café
so you can enjoy your new purchases in a leisurely and delicious environment.
The Friends of the Meriden Public Library also assists the City of Meriden,
in a pinch, with completion of maintenance projects. Through funding as
well as manual labor, we help the city to complete a variety of upkeep projects
throughout the library including painting, carpet installation and landscaping
upgrades.
